Artwork for Museum and Town Hall Stations

I wrote to Gabrielle Williams when I was informed that the Metro Tunnel Project was seeking “suitable” artwork for both Museum and Town Hall Stations.

This is the reply I received..

David Balfour (sent 2025)

REPLY: Metro Tunnel Project Office

Dear Mr Balfour

ARTWORK FOR STATE LIBRARY AND TOWN HALL STATIONS

Thank you for your email on 6 October 2025 to the Minister for Transport Infrastructure regarding artwork at the Metro Tunnel Stations. As the Metro Tunnel Project Office oversees the delivery of the project, your letter has been forwarded to me for a response.

A key feature of the new five Metro Tunnel stations is a suite of permanent artworks delivered through the Metro Tunnel Legacy Artwork Program. These artworks are part of the Metro Tunnel’s Legacy Artwork Program and were commissioned through a competitive curated shortlist and open expressions of interest. As part of this selection process, an arts advisory panel was appointed to oversee the selections and provide expert advice about the suitability of artists for each commission.

These specially selected artworks will establish a sense of place and identity for our new city landmarks, help orientate commuters and provide Melburnians the opportunity to engage with world-class art every day.

These artworks have been integrated into completed stations ahead of the Metro Tunnel opening in early December. As a result, we are unable to accommodate your suggestion to display the transportation mural. However, we trust that Melburnians will enjoy the range of artworks that will grace the new Metro Tunnel stations.

Thank you for raising this matter and for your interest in the Metro Tunnel Project.

Yours sincerely,

Kieran McIvor
Chief Operating Officer
