Welcome to “Friends of Cavalcade of Transport Mural”
This website aims to educate, inform and entertain readers about the pride of Melbourne mural that is the Cavalcade of Transport Mural.
The Cavalcade of Transport Mural traces a century of transport progress from 1835. The mural was painted by “State Artist” Harold Freedman and three assistants, an assignment that took five years and financed by the state government costing $250,000.
Unveiled by Premier Sir Rupert Hamer in January 1978 in the concourse of Spencer Street Station – Melbourne staged a huge display of historic vehicles to mark the occasion. Old trams and steam trains ran the rails again, vintage planes flew overhead and hundreds of vintage vehicles – including fire engines, cars and motorcycles – were driven through city streets.
Three decades later, Spencer Street Station was redeveloped into Southern Cross Station. The Cavalcade of Transport Mural is now on a back wall behind department stores in the Spencer Outlet Centre adjoining Southern Cross Station.
Our objective is to have the mural relocated to a more appropriate and befitting location, given itβs a $250,000 artwork owned by the people of Victoria.
