Peter Sutton > The Hon Ben Carroll MP
September 28, 2022
Good morning all,
I have had a reply this morning from Ben Carroll’s office regarding the mural.
It has been referred to the Transport Department.
He makes the point it is at least protected from weather and vandalism in its present location.

I wrote to the National Trust recently regarding the Mural.
I have had a reply today, which I will share here. The good news is that it is protected on the Victorian Heritage Register.
It seems the best approach is to try the MP’s and Lord Mayor.

Dear Peter,
Thank you for your enquiry regarding the mural titled ‘History of Transport’ by Harold Freedman, National Trust file no. B6678.
The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) is aware of the location of the mural, in the Spencer Street DFO Shopping Centre. We are also aware of the mural’s status on the Victorian Heritage Register (H1936), affording it the strongest legislative protections in Victoria.
We note your current advocacy work in contacting the Lord Mayor of the City of Melbourne and Steve Dimopoulos MP regarding this issue. At this stage, they are the best points of contact to get the mural moved to a new location.
Thank you for your recommendation that we include this issue in our magazine. Any suggestions for articles in our magazine are best sent to media@nattrust.com.au.
Thank you again for your continued efforts to support heritage in Victoria.
Kind Regards,
Eleni”
I hope this is of help to members of this group. I will write to the media at National Trust to facilitate further community interest.

A copy of an email today to the National Trust.
Good afternoon,
I am a member of the National Trust of Australia ( Victoria) having joined the Trust in 1982. I have maintained my membership throughout the forty years since, and a couple of years ago, upgraded my membership to the Life Membership option.
In 1978 Premier Dick Hamer unveiled at Spencer Street Station the work Cavalcade of Transport. This was displayed in a very prominent position and was admired by many.
It’s a large work about 38 metres long and was completed by State Artist Harold Freeman. Following redevelopment works, as Southern Cross station was established, it was relocated.
It is currently located at the DFO in the northern end of Southern Cross. There it is seen by fewer members of the public, as it’s now mainly shoppers and it’s half obscured by pipes, air conditioning ducts and conduits.
It should be relocated to a more prominent position where more Victorians can see it. There is a Facebook group Cavalcade of Transport Rescue Group. It has been suggested that it could be displayed in one of the new railway stations. It would be great if this could be exhibited more prominently in time for the Commonwealth Games.
It can be seen now, but it’s obscured and it’s location not well known.
I have corresponded with the Lord Mayor, and my MP as well as the National Trust Advocacy group.
I think that this would make a great story and be told in our Trust publications.
It’s an important asset and represents the period from 1835 reflecting the evolution of transport in this state.
Kind regards,
Peter Sutton
